Day 20: Seeking God First

Day 20: Seeking God First

Scripture: Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Devotional

There’s a constant tug-of-war for our attention. The moment we open our eyes in the morning, the demands of the day start crowding in—deadlines, family needs, texts, finances, worries about the future. And in the noise of it all, it becomes easy to let our minds be pulled in a hundred different directions before we’ve even spoken to God.

But Jesus offers a different way—a better way: “Seek first the kingdom of God.” Not when everything else is handled. Not after you’ve put out all the fires. Not just on Sundays. First.

Why? Because what you seek first shapes everything else. When anxiety, control, or worldly success take first place in our thinking, chaos follows. But when we set our minds on God’s kingdom and righteousness, peace takes root, our decisions become clearer, and our confidence more secure.

Seeking God first doesn’t mean ignoring responsibilities. It means inviting Him into them. It means starting your day with His Word, filtering your thoughts through His truth, and letting His presence guide every decision.

Think of your mind like a compass. If it’s even slightly off at the start, you’ll end up miles from your destination. But when you recalibrate it to point toward God’s kingdom, you stay on course—even when life throws curveballs.

Many believers find that prioritizing time with God—first thing or first in decision-making—shifts their mental battles. Stress decreases, perspective returns, and confidence grows. Not because life becomes easy, but because their foundation is steady.

Jesus wasn’t promising a stress-free life when He said, “All these things will be added to you.” He was promising that when we align our hearts and minds with His will, He cares for the rest.

Today, don’t just seek answers; seek God. Don’t chase peace; chase His presence. Don’t fix problems first; fix your eyes on Him. Let Him be the first voice you listen to, the first thought you act on, and the first place you run.

Additional Scripture for Meditation

  • Psalm 63:1: “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you…”
  • Colossians 3:1-2: “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
  • Proverbs 3:5-6: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Reflection

  • What usually captures your attention first each day—stress, schedules, or seeking God?
  • How can you rearrange your routine to prioritize God’s presence at the start?
  • In what area of your life do you need to trust God to “add all these things” as you seek Him first?

Practical Application

  • First 5 Minutes: Set aside the first five minutes of your day to read Scripture, pray, or sit quietly before God.
  • Write a Kingdom List: Instead of a to‑do list, write a “Kingdom First” list—What does God want me to focus on today?
  • Re-center Midday: When your mind feels scattered, pause and pray, “God, I seek You again right now. Help me refocus.”

Prayer

God, I choose to seek You first today. Before the noise, the deadlines, and the distractions—I want to set my heart and mind on You. Lead my thoughts, my steps, and my desires. Help me to prioritize Your kingdom and trust that You will take care of everything else. In Jesus name Amen.
