Day 20: Generosity as a Lifestyle

Day 20: Generosity as a Lifestyle

Introduction: The Reservoir vs. The River

Picture two bodies of water. The first is a reservoir, a man-made lake with a giant concrete dam. Its entire purpose is to hoard water, to store it up, to hold it in reserve. But what happens to water that just sits there for too long? It becomes stagnant. It gets murky. Nothing flows out of it.

Now, picture a powerful river. Water is constantly flowing through it. It carves through canyons, it nourishes the land on its banks, it brings life wherever it goes. The river isn’t trying to hoard the water; it’s a channel for it. It lets the water flow through it.

Let me ask you this morning: When it comes to your money, your time, and your resources, are you living like a stagnant reservoir or a life-giving river?

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (ESV) – “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Devotional

We need to have a gut-check conversation about generosity, because the world has sold us a lie. The world’s system is built on being a reservoir. It tells you: “Get all you can, can all you get, and then sit on the can.” It teaches us to clench our fists tightly around what we have, because our security is in our bank account, our stuff, our assets.

But the Kingdom of God is a completely different, completely EXTREME economy. In God’s economy, everything you have isn’t really yours to begin with. It all belongs to Him. You’re not an owner; you’re a manager. You’re a steward. And God doesn’t bless you with resources so you can build a bigger dam and create a bigger reservoir. He blesses you so you can become a wider river.

Generosity is a direct assault on the idols of greed, materialism, and self-sufficiency. Every time you give cheerfully—not because you have to, but because you want to—you are telling God, “I trust You more than I trust my money.” You are declaring that He is your source, not your salary.

And notice the scripture doesn’t name an amount. It’s about the heart. A lifestyle of generosity isn’t about writing one big check to impress people. It’s about cultivating an open-handed posture in everything you do. It’s looking for needs and meeting them. It’s being extravagantly generous with your time, your skills, your encouragement, and yes, your finances. It’s about choosing to be a river, and trusting that the Source of all water will never run dry.

Additional Scripture for Meditation

  • Proverbs 11:25 (ESV): “A generous person will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.”
  • Acts 20:35 (ESV): “…remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
  • Luke 6:38 (ESV): “…give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Reflection

  • Gut Check: Be brutally honest. When it comes to giving, do you do it “cheerfully,” or do you do it “reluctantly or under compulsion”? What does your attitude reveal about your heart?
  • What is the biggest fear that holds you back from being more generous with your money and your time?
  • How does viewing yourself as a “manager” of God’s resources, rather than an “owner,” change your perspective on giving?

Practical Application

  • Plan an Act of Generosity: Don’t wait for the feeling to strike. This week, intentionally plan one act of generosity. Decide now that you are going to meet a specific need, give to a specific ministry, or bless a specific person.
  • Give Your Time: Find one way this week to be extravagantly generous with your time for the sake of the family. Offer to babysit for a young couple for free. Spend an hour helping an older church member with yard work. Don’t expect anything in return.
  • Pray to Be a River: Spend time in prayer this week asking God to break the spirit of fear and greed off your life. Ask Him to help you loosen your grip on your resources and to transform you from a stagnant reservoir into a life-giving river for His glory.

Prayer

Father, we confess that we hold onto Your blessings with a clenched fist. We trust in our bank accounts more than we trust in You. Forgive us for our fear and our greed. Lord, we want to be a generous people because You are a generous God. Break the power of materialism in our lives. Teach us the joy of giving cheerfully. Transform us into a church that is a mighty river of Your resources, bringing life and refreshment to everyone we touch. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
